What I Want(ed) Wednesday

I wanted a closet update and am happy to report I was finally able to get it done.  Yeah!!!

As I mentioned one of the things I am working on this year is building a better quality wardrobe.  I figure before I start bringing in the new I best start by doing away with the old and edit my closet ruthlessly ala Stacy London of What Not to Wear!!

I feel like my closet has more than its fair share of clothes that are bought without really thinking them through.  One of my biggest offenses is buying something at the last minute for one night only, like a date night or out with friends.  There is definitely a recurring theme with those items that I bought in haste — and that is that they usually end up in the goodwill bag.

I have read countless articles (as I’m sure you have too) on the appropriate way to purge your closet, but I never really follow them exactly.  I decided that since the same information is written over and over again I should clearly stop resisting and give it a try.

So I decided to get busy and start the big purge on my closet.

My ultimate goal is to fill my closet with classic pieces that suit my lifestyle and that I can mix and match.  I will allow myself to throw in some “wild card” items from season to season if I particularly like a trend.

So here were my rules:

1. Stains, little holes or too many pills it can’t be saved — out {mental note to purchase a sweater stone for those sweaters that need it}

2. Haven’t worn in a year — out

3.  Will fit if I lose  5, 10 pounds some weight — out

4.  Does not suit my lifestyle anymore — out

5. Love it but look like death warmed over in the color — out

6. Any item that offers my figure no shape i.e. boxy, baggy, oversized — out

7. Anything that is uncomfortable to wear (pinches, tugs, too tight in some spots) — out

8.  For those items that are in good shape but just not for me anymore (don’t suit my lifestyle or I’m over them) — consign (why not make a few bucks if I can)

I found that it took several days to really finish my purge, I had to go back several times to get rid of those things that seemed to be glued to the hanger.

My closet is very small and my husband gets 1/4 of it for his shirts and dress pants(I’m so generous!) so I really have to make the most of the space.  I decided to head over to home depot and pick up a unit that would separate the two sides of the closet with shelves and drawers.  All of my shelving is wire so it leaves marks on all my folded items!!

I was able to get 4 drawers and some shelving for around $275 at Home Depot.  Then I picked up some contact paper at Marshalls (they had adorable patterns by the way) to line the drawers and the back of shelves, and a basket to hold my scarves for under $15.

Here is what was behind the doors….

REALLY BAD, I KNOW

REALLY BAD, I KNOW

And after  a few hours of leaving my husband alone while he put the unit together here is my new and improved space!

I may never have a massive closet that I can smile and twirl around in but at least when I open my closet doors I will be greeted with something better than I had!   On to the next challenge of adding some new items a little at a time!

Have a beautiful day!
